New Oral Health in Aged Care online training resource

This online training resource has been developed by NSW Dental Assistants' (Professional) Assn in partnership with NSW Community Services and Health Industry Training Advisory Body.

The Oral Health in Aged Care online training resource focuses primarily on the knowledge and skills needed by an aged care worker to support aged care residents with daily best practice oral health care and management. It is available free at www.workplaceskills.com.au
It is highly anticipated that providing free and easy access to this oral health training will assist aged care workers to gain new skills and enhance the quality of care in aged care facilities. This training resource is for:
• aged care workers in residential aged facilities
• dental assistants who wish to gain knowledge specific to older people
• aged care workplace supervisors and other employees responsible for direct client care.

Users will need to have a valid email address to create a password protected student account. The online training should take approximately 3 hours to complete from start to finish. However, it has been divided into seven individual modules that may be completed separately and worked through at any pace with unlimited access with valid login.

For aged care workers who are working toward achieving the CHC30208 Certificate III in Aged Care, the learning in this resource will contribute to achievement of CHCICS301A Provide support to meet personal care needs.

Training Resources Available – Basic Home Fire Safety for Community Services Workers

Due to the high fire risk experienced by groups in the community, a national consortium of fire services (led by the Victorian Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board) lobbied for knowledge of basic home fire safety to be embedded in relevant work functions across the CHC08 Community Services Training Package. As a result, this information was included in nine units of competency, to be taken up by workers delivering services in a community setting.

To support the community sector and the training sector implement this change and to include content appropriately in courses, fire services have developed training resources which are now available to download and use.

In addition to use by Registered Training Organisations, fire services also recommend use of the training resources by community care providers for induction of new workers and skills maintenance for existing workers.

The information is intended to increase the fire safety of community care recipients, workers and provider agencies.
